Phos Hilaron: From the Masses Rise the Saints
An art action of exaltation and togetherness countering the current socio-political landscape.
Chinatown Soup, NY, NY, 2017
As a response to the 2016 election, I turned to my community as a source of inspiration and light. In a one month period photographed 100 individuals in customized sets transforming them into patron Saints. These images were then placed on votive candles which were featured in The Chapel. The walls were lined floor-to-ceiling with photographic murals of interlocking bodies: images of flesh upon flesh and limb upon limb all interwoven representing the masses. Protruding from the “masses” are 100 Saint Candles on wooden pedestals, hand crafted by the Patron Saint of Rock n Roll, elevating and illuminating the beauty of difference and individuality.
The exhibition also featured a Reliquary showcasing various Saint objects and the Altar, a group portrait of selected Saints on 12 foot by 7 foot light box which radiated a soft glow guiding one’s journey through the sacred space.

In response to the divisive identity politics that define our current sociocultural dynamic, nique art object that, when lit, reveals the identity of the spirit of the Saint within. In response to the divisive identity politics that define our current sociocultural dynamic, I returned to the community of my youth in search of inspiration and light. Over a one-month period, I photographed a diverse group of 59 Indianapolis community members (from Trump Voters to Transgender people) in intimate, personal environments designed to tell individual stories beyond the veils of stereotype, assumption and the polarization of politics.
This adaptation focused not just on the beauty of difference and individuality, but emphasized homogeneity is not harmony, rather respect and inclusion of all is.
